Jacob Jansen van Nostrand Updates
This article addresses the following issues:
a) Jacob Jansen was brother to Hans Jansen van Nosstrand
b) Jacob Jansen van Nostrand arrived in New Netherland (New York) in 1638
c) Jacob Jansen van Nostrand married in 1650 Jannetje Jacobs
d) Jannetje Jacobs was daughter of Aaron Jacobs
e) Aaron Jacobs marr. Widow Lisbeth Valdinck 16 Aug. 1685
f) Jacob Jansen van Nostrand marr. 2) ab. 1660 Anna Claesen Groesbeck
g) Jacob Jansen van Nostrand is identical to "Jacob Jansen" in Kingston, Ulster County in 1663.
All spelling variations of "Nostrand" have been considered in my research and found spellings have been preserved.
There is no documentation or evidence to believe Hans Jansen van Nostrand and Jacob Jansen van Nostrand were brothers or related.
There is no documentation or evidence evidence that 2 or 3 brothers called "van Nostrand" arrived together in 1638/39.
There also is Volckie Juriaense van Noortstrant (she marr. 1639 in North Holland and is recorded in a mutual will in 1665 in New Netherland) who is not related .
There is also a Pieter Ostrander married Rachel Dingman in 1704 who is not related. He is son of Peter Pietersen and Rebecca Treppenhagen and he is the first of the family to use the surname Ostrander.
It remains unknown what original source the claim of relationship has, the two men never met or interacted, neither shows a specific birthdate or known ancestry, this "brother" or "likely brother" can only be based on the assumption that same surnames show family relationship.
It is most important is not to assume that all people originated "van Nostrand" (meaning "from the Northshore)" and using this surname were related. The original name comes from the island Nordstrand a German settlement ruled by the Danish, there was a huge tidal wave in 1634, many people fled to a nearby city called Husum, and within several years immigrated to Holland. (more in Hans Jansen van Nostrand article)
"1638 arrival date" one source for this arrival date is likely from "the documentary history of the Nederdeutsche geemente.... By Henry Stoutenburgh 1904 who quotes "History of New Netherland v. 1 p. 433 by Edwin B. O'Callaghan who in turn gives no source, just a list for 1638 settlers in Rensselaerwijck--- the page # is not 433 but 438--- O'Callaghan's "History of New Netherlands" from 1850/1896 has been declared "flawed" and contains errors in 1902 the Holland Society published a revised publication."Jacob Janse van Nostrandt!" is recorded with arrival in 1638 in Annals of Albany by J. Munsell, his records are based on O'Callaghan.
Therefore there is no credited records for his 1638 arrival. There are no records from 1638 to 1642.
1642 "Jacob Jansz from Noordstrand was in Rensselaer as early as 1642 when supplies for him are charged to Cornelis Hendricks Nes" (From Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts p. 830 Cornelis Hendriks van Es/van Nes was farmer, brewer and councilman)
I consider this record reliable, as it pertains to accounts for the West India company.
1649 Jacob de Brouwer received apparently in 1649 permission to built a hofstee (must be hofstede, a house on a lot) next to mr. hogens (deHooges) for which from 1650 to 1652 he is charged with a rent of fl. 16 a year" (From Documents of the assembly of the state of New York v. 28)
20 Feb. 1650 Jacob Jansen y m.(Bachelor ) married Jannetie Jacobs yd (unmarried women)" (New Amsterdam Church record)
In Stoutenburghs book/van Nostrand article "Jannetje Jacobs dau. Of Aaron Jacobs who married 16 Aug. 1685 widow Lysbeth Valdinck"
this is wrong: wife of Jacob Jansen (who could be van Nostrand or not) would be Jannetje "Aaronse" according to custom. Also, the church recording shows
16 Aug. 1685 Isaacson, Arend widower (married) Lysbeth widow of Abraham Valdinck
( "Jacobsen, Arent " recording appears only one time in "Manual of the corporation of the city of New York vo. 0 p.87...)
All connecting church records say "Arent Isaacsen" who is identified as Arent Isaacson van Hoeck, he has his baptized child in 2 May 1657 , he married 5 times 1) Unknown 2) Geertje Everts 3)9 Aug. 1665 Styntje Laurens widow of Jan Hendricksen 4) 16 Aug. 1685 Lysbeth Stevens widow Valdenck beyde wonende alhier (New Amsterdam church records meaning "both living here") and 5) Maira Jans van Hoboeken 1696.
Clearly Jannetje in 1650 is daughter of Jacob Unknown, she is not connected to Arent Isaacson van Hoeck, (although she is wet nursing his child in 1664) we can not identify" Jannetje Jacobs" there is no further data, there are no baptismal records for her children or as sponsor, but she is likely "Jannetje de brouster rec. 1662 and 1665 wife of Jacob Jans van Nostrand.
"6 March 1651 given to Jacob Jansz van morst (yes!)72.00" -footnotes "Jacob jans van Noortstrant" (From "Deacon's accounts 1652-1674 for the church of Beveryck by J. Venema)
"28 Nov. 1651 Jacob Jansen van Nordstrad swears fealty to the patroon of Rensselaerwijck (with 45 other men)
"23 April 1652 Jacob de brower asks permission to built addition to his house near first kill -granted" (Court minutes of Albany 1652-1660)
He is not recorded as " patent in 1652 for Jacob Jansen van Nostrandt the brewer" (Van Nostrand article online from "Long Island genealogy")
" 3 Sept 1654 Jacob Jansz van Nortstrant.. his house, lot and garden to be sold at public auction..house adjacent to Hendrick Gerrits to west and the poorhouse east with lot besides a garden located behind Fort Otange # 19-6 1/2 rods long and 4 1/2 rods wide with patent thereof,... first payment cash within a month 2nd payment next May. In this sale the mill and the brewer's tools in the house are not included... the buyer was Rutger Jacobs for 830 guilders.. surety given...witnesses.."
(Please note this does not say "...on Beaver street and at the other corner adjoining an alley on lots five and six was his brewery which he sold in 1654 to Rutger Jacobsen alias Rut van Woert vis: Jacob Jansen van Noorstran's brewery and lot in Beaver street except the horse mill and brewer's tools..." (From "Van Nostrand" article )
It is only assumed that his house was also a brewery.
"4 Nov. 1654 given to Jacob Jans van Noorstrant 300.-" (Deacons accounts...)
"Nov. 1654-4 ditto given to Jacob Janse van Noostrand in strung sewant at the interest of 10% 170.15"(same)
"Nov. 1654 received from Jacob Jansen van Noortstrant for the delivery of 6 hundred clapboards and for fetching some boards as a reduction of the old promissory note on the interest as well as the principal florins 48"(same)
There are also some records 1653/154 that gives credit to his account as he pays several smaller amounts to his loan interest.
"28 Nov. 1656 Jacob Janssen van Noortstrant request to be the gager of barrels, request granted" (Fort Orange Court minutes).
"1657 Dominie Schaets sells land north of Jacob de brouwer..." (Documents of the city and county of Albany...)
"12 July 1658 Jacob Janse van Noortstrant conveys to Hendrick Gerritsen a lot bounded east of grantor's house 9 rods 30 feet
Part of the patent by ... Stuyvesant from 23 Apr. 1652." (Early reecords of the city and County of Albany by A. van Laer)
This is most likely Hendrick Gerrits van Meulen, it says nothing about "being on Beaver Street or South Pearl Street" or "seems to have been divided into three smaller parcels numbers one, two and three" (Van Nostran article on website "Long Island genealogy") also the lot sale was not in 1680 as claimed.
"About 1660 claimed: Jacob Janse van Nostrand marr. Anna Claesen Groesbeck," there is neither documentation nor evidence for such marriage. Furthermore son Jacob van Nostrand marr. Annetje (say Anna) Croesvelt, she is also called Croesbeck in 1688 which has created great confusion. Claes Jacobse Groesbeek (Groesbeck) is also recorded as Niclaas Jacobs van Rotterdam arrived 1662, he married Elizabeth Stevenen had 8 children, he made a will in 1709 all his children were alive he had no daughter Annetje, Agnietje or Anna.
"Aug. 1661 Jacob the brewer 50 guilders in sewant" -the footnote says "Jacob Jans van Noorstrant"(Deacons accounts...)
"12 Sept. 1661 obligation of Jacob Jans van Nortstrant 8 florins (Early records ...)
"Oct. 1661 to Jacob brouer a blanket and 3 ells of dosijnties, ( some length of fabric)also 10 guilders in sewant"(same)
"Nov. 1662 Jannetie de brouster is paid fl. 14.9 for stringing 251 guilders and YARN" (Deacons accounts)
This pertains to the stringing of wampum (shells) used as currency.
"9 July 1663 Jacob Jansen van Noortstrant is witness to Storm van der Zee in Beverijck" (early records...)
"August 1663 Jacob Jansen is baptismal sponsor to child of Aert Pieterse Tack in Kingston, Ulster County" (Church records)
"18 Nov. 1663 Jacob Jansen is baptismal sponsor to child of Jacob Barentse and Maritje Simons in Kingston, Ulster Co." (Church records)
The following is wrong"...the massacre of the Easopus occurred 7 June 1663 when Jacob Jansen van Nostrandt, the brewer, appears to have been present."...(from van Nostrand family, online article from "Long Island Genealogy which is based on Henry Stoutenburghs 1904 article in Documentary history .....)
The appearance of "Jacob Jansen" does not identify him as "van Nostrand" There are numerous people called "Jacob Jansen" around that time in Kingston (Jacob Jansen Gardenier, Jacob Jansen Moesman, Jacob Jansen Hap, Jacob Jansen van Stoutenburgh, Jacob Jansen van Etten. Also, Jacob Jansen van Noortstrant is recorded in July 1663 in Albany, why would he appear as non related sponsor in Kingston in August 1663? Van Nostrand is simply NOT Jacob Jansen in Kingston!
"May 1664 18 ditto paid to Jacob de brouer for wet nursing Arent Isaacks child florins 60.00"(same- the money is not paid to his wife?)
"29 April 1665 Jackop Jansz van Norstran debit 40.00"
" 1665 Arent van Curler ...land west of Jacob Brouwers..." (Documents.. city and county of Albany..)
"June 1667 Jannetje de brouster paid with Baeffie Pieters 27. For cleaning the church-footnote wife of Jacob Janse van Noortstrant (from FOCM")
The Fort Orange Court minutes however show only the name "Jacob Janse van Noortstrant" no mentioning of his wife.
"1668" Jacob Jans van Nostrand is Sealer of weights and measures (claimed not confirmed)
"1676 .. Jacob Jansen van Nostrandt the brewer... in 1676 signed a petition of the inhabitants of Esopus for a ministry..." (Van Nostrand article)
The petition dated 1676 does show that, it only shows "Jacob Johnson van Eten" and "Jacob Janse Decker" Van Nostrand did not live in Esopus in 1676.
"24 Feb. 1678/9 Jacob Jansz van Nortstrant is witness to will of Storm van der Zee in Albany.( Calendar of wills...)
"1679 Jacob van Noortstrant-1 rod-- (Albany list of people who had to fence in their property-from Vital Statistics by Billard)
"10 June 1681 witness "Jacob van Noortstrant ( not Jacob Jansen!) (Early records...)
"19 Oct. 1687 Jacob Jansen van Norstran (t) (recorded spelling) sell to Douwe AUkes his house and lot lying in this town for 60 good beavers at 8 guilders.. or just value in money, wheat or peas.. each payment in 4 installments 1) Feb. 1687, 2) one year after and 3) and year after the second.." (Early records..)
"30 Apr. 1687 the aforesaid Douwe Aukes acknowledges he had transferred above contract of sale to the deacons of the Reformed Church .. that he be released from all claims of Jacob Jansen van Noortstrant.. his mark" (Early records..)
"1 Dec. 1700 Jacob Janse van Noortstrant of Albany... heretofore sold to Jacob Tysen van der Heyden a lot for a garden within the limits of Albany in the great pasture of the consitory of Albany...by allotment No. 19 being four rods and a half rod, length six rods and a half...therefore Anna widow of said Jacob Tyse van der Heyden in consideration of another garden lot conveyed this day by the deacons of the church of Albany to said widow's son Dirk van der Heyden lying ion the plain behind the fence of Marelis Janz deceased) has requested him to convey the aforesaid lot to said deacons, as he hereby does convey the aforesaid to Johannis Cuyler and Evert Banker, deacons of said church with all rights.... By virtue of a certain patent to him granted by the late governor Petrus Stuyvesant of date 25 Oct. 1653.... That he is full paid and satisfied...."Jacob van Noortstrant (L.S.) signed sealed .... Presense of David Schuyler, Johannes Bratt," (From Annual Report issue 99 by New York state library)
The dimension of this lot for a garden are identical to sale by public auction in 1654.
The "patent" of 25 Oct. 1653 has not been confirmed.
Final Notes
"Available records don't show any accounts or court cases reg. van Noortstrant's activity as brewer, although he is frequently referred to as "Jacob de brouwer: and his wife as "Jannetie de brouster" In November 1656 he is appointed gauger of the casks and again in 1660 (twice), there is mentioning he was a cooper by trade, in 1653 he paid a boarding fee to the poorhouse.... this does not provide a success story.."
From "Beverwijck a Dutch village on the American frontier 1652-1664 by J. Venema
However it is Venema who identifies" Jacob de brouwer "and" Jannetje de brouster" as Jacob Jansen van Noortstrant and wife. The original Ft. Orange records do not connect the two names. The only time we have Jacob Jansen van Noortstrand referred to as "brewer" is in the land deed from 1654 "excluding his brewer's tools"
It appears that nevertheless Jacob de brouwer and Jacob Jansen van Noortstrant are identical.
There is no birth data for Jacob, his parents are unknown, except that his father was Jan. It can not be ascertained but it is likely that he originated from the island called "Norstrand" in Holstein than under Dutch rule, now German.
As explained the "van Noortstrant" name pertains to the origin and shows no relationship to Hans Jansen van Nostrand who is recorded in 1687 being in this country 48 years-arriving 1639)(who by the way was never recorded with "van Nostrand" but van Noortstrant, Hans Hansen, Hans Johnson and Jan Johnson.
By the way, Hans Jansen van Nostrand makes a will in 1679 as Hans Jansen vann Noortstrant, recorded as Hans Johnson van Noortstrant in Holsteyn...proved 1690 he does not mention a brother. (which would not be customary anyhow) I have a copy of the original document.
Jacob Jansen's arrival date of 1638 shows no primary documentation his first recording could be 1642 in Rensselaer listed in accounts for the West India company, which is a reliable primary source.
One Jacob Janse married one Jannetje Jacobs in 1650, but this could be any Jacob Janse (and there were many)
Jannetje Jacobs is NOT daughter of Aaron Jacobs who marr. 16 Aug. 1686 the widow Lysbeth Valdinck. There is recorded evidence that the groom for this wedding was Arent Jacobse (van Hoeck) whose children used "Arentse"
None of his children have a baptismal date, based on their marriages the earliest birth date would be likely around 1654 for daughter Gertrud Jacobs(marr. Ab. 1675) and ab. 1656 or earlier for son Jan Jacobsz van Noortstrant (rec. 26 June 1677, 4 Nov. 1680 as landowner in Cohoes) other children probably born after 1660.
The land deeds indicate that his property was parceled off and sold as separate lots, street names are not recorded and there is no recorded brewery
His appointment as "gager" in 1660 can not be confirmed, or any appointment in 1668.
His last recording is in 1700, his death is not known he leaves no will, there are no administration papers.
Indeed it is amazing that Jacob Jans van Nostrand (or Jacob de brouwer) does not appear on assessment rolls , census of Albany etc. It appears clear that he was NOT in Kingston August and November 1663, as in July 1663 he is recorded in Albany.
He was not in Kinston signing petition in 1676.
